Αλήθεια, ποια θεωρείται η καλύτερη ταινία του 21ου αιώνα;
Σίγουρα, η ερώτηση από μόνη της είναι αρκετά αμφιλεγόμενη και δέχεται πολλές απαντήσεις. Αν θέλαμε να φτιάξουμε μια λίστα με τις καλύτερες ταινίες στη σύγχρονη ιστορία του κινηματογράφου, θα έπρεπε να λάβουμε υπόψη πολλούς και διαφορετικούς παράγοντες. Τα τεχνικά μέρη, όπως η σκηνοθεσία και το μοντάζ, είναι τα πρώτα που έρχονται στο μυαλό, όμως δεν είναι μόνο αυτά. Η ιστορία, η μελλοντική διαχρονική αξία, τα βαθύτερα μηνύματα και οι κοινωνικές προεκτάσεις που αποκτά ένα φιλμ, όπως και οποιοδήποτε είδος τέχνης, είναι όλα εξίσου σημαντικά όταν αναζητούμε την κορυφαία ταινία των τελευταίων χρόνων.
Στην πολυσύνθετη αυτή ερώτηση έδωσε απάντηση το BBC Culture, το 2016, ρωτώντας 177 κριτικούς κινηματογράφου από όλες τις ηπείρους της Γης, έκτος της Ανταρκτικής. Ένας εκκωφαντικός αριθμός κριτικών λοιπόν αποφάσισε, χωρίς αυτό να αποτελεί ιδιαίτερη έκπληξη κατ’ εμέ, ως κορυφαία ταινία από το 2000 και μετά το Mulholland Drive, του David Lynch, ακολουθούμενο από το In the mood for love, του Wong Kar-wai. Την τρίτη θέση κατέλαβε η ταινία There will be Blood, του Paul Thomas Anderson, ενώ την τέταρτη, μία από τις προσωπικά αγαπημένες μου ταινίες, όπως πιστεύω συμβαίνει και για πολλούς από εσάς τους αναγνώστες του Manwe Stories. Το θρυλικό animation Spirited Away, του Hayao Miyazaki, από το Studio Ghibli.
Τι έγινε όμως με τις fantasy ταινίες της παρ’ ολίγον εικοσαετίας;
Δεν είναι κρυφό πως οι κριτικοί δεν συμπαθούν και ιδιαίτερα τα είδη της φαντασίας, της επιστημονικής φαντασίας και του τρόμου. Βέβαια, εκτός από το Spirited Away, κάποιες από τις καλύτερες ταινίες του φανταστικού, κατάφεραν να βρεθούν σε αυτό το top 100. Χαρακτηριστικότερα παραδείγματα αποτελούν, Ο Λαβύρινθος του Πάνα, του Guillermo del Toro (θέση 17), το σαρωτικό Mad Max: Fury Road (George Miller, 2015) και, φυσικά, ο Σκοτεινός Ιππότης, του Cristopher Nolan, που κατέκτησε την 33η θέση.
